"Blessed is the one You discipline, O Lord, and teach from Your law,"
~ Psalms 94:12
Divine discipline is a core subject in the university of Christ. It is no optional module for any Christian, but is compulsory for all who study under their Master: Christ Jesus. It is not pleasant, since it will at times involve rebukes and rods. The Christian student will be expected to put their biblical theory into practice, since Christ will not have anything to do with self-inflated intellectuals; He expects His students to put His teachings into practice through the life tests He sends their way.
Though unpleasant, divine discipline is not at all unfruitful. It is the highest accolade for the Christian student. And they are instructed by the most distinguished and qualified teacher: Christ, the Son of God who is Wisdom Himself. Other lecturers possess certificates of their qualifications; Christ had a board above His head on the cross calling Him the King of the Jews. Others received a doctoral hat upon graduation. Christ received a crown of thorns. Others wear their graduation gowns as a sign of their achievements. Christ wore nothing but a scarlet robe. Therefore, He does not take His students through anything that He himself has not endured.
Therefore my brother and sister in Christ, if you find yourself in the midst of a trial this morning, how blessed you are! While other lecturers are paid to teach their students, your Master Christ Himself paid the ultimate price that you might be enrolled in His care. The Lord chastens those He loves!
